Things I Love #8: Everyone in Australia who voted for the Greens today!!

With the two major parties virtually indistinguishable in their centre-right policies, this election The Greens have truly stood out more than ever as the only real and worthwhile alternative in Australian politics.

I wanted to like Julia Gillard, I really did (and she’ll always stand out as a bastion of reason & farsightedness when pitted against Tony Abbott, but then…), but her weakness on dealing with things such as the mining tax and addressing climate change, pandering to the fear-mongers over “boat people”, and her (apparently) personal view against gay marriage have proved her and her government to be little more than centre-right-light.

And, quite frankly, the less said about Tony Abbott and the Liberal Party, the better. The fact that “Stop the boats” has been a central part of their campaign, and Tony Abbott himself has been quoted as saying (among other gems) that “Climate change is absolute crap” and “Australian children must read the Bible” is enough to make my skin crawl.

Bob Brown and The Greens, on the other hand, have provided a real, sensible and compassionate alternative to this horror-inducing race to the lowest common denominator.

Thankfully, it looks like a larger number of Australian voters than ever before are feeling this way. The results tonight will tell.

Fingers crossed for our strange and beautiful country.
