Happy Father’s Day

September 5, 2010

It’s Father’s Day today here in Australia, our first without Dad.

I think it will always be the milestones that will be the hardest to get through without him; the birthdays, Christmases, and maybe one day weddings and grandchildren. The things he should be there for…

He wasn’t a perfect father (I’m pretty sure none are), but he was close enough. He was a kind and quiet man. He was strong and capable, seemingly able to make or do anything that needed to be made or done. When I was little I thought he was ten foot tall. His favourite things in the world were fishing and flying (he was a glider pilot, and later on when he retired, also got his light aircraft licence). He was a farmer who made his own home brew beer, loved his dogs and worked bloody hard for his family. He had an incredible “farmer’s tan”, nut-brown on his arms and legs, and lily-white where he was covered by his work shirt and shorts. He was intelligent, well-read and watched the ABC News every night. He wanted good lives for his children, and supported us in anything we wanted to do. He always started swimming earlier in the year than anyone else, and would get out with a big smile on his face and declare it “Fresh!” while we shivered sympathetically.  He was also the King of the Dad Joke.

I feel incredibly blessed and grateful to have had him as my father for nearly 30 years.

I love you Dad, always. Happy Father’s Day.

This is so beautiful and honest, it made me cry and I was at work and everything! And what an amazing photo. Thanks for being so honest and compassionate and generous with your writing 🙂

You made me cry and you made me laugh, both of which completetly ruined my make up.
Thank you for sharing and giving us a tiny glimpse into who your father was.
Truth is beauty abd this was truly wonderful. :’)
